Why Do Kidneys Stop Working?
WHY DO KIDNEYS STOP WORKING?

Quote:There are several causes of chronic kidney disease. The two major
causes are first, diabetes and second, high blood pressure.

In diabetes, excess sugar in the blood can damage the glomerulus. In high blood pressure the ’pressure’ can do the same thing. A damaged glomerulus becomes leaky and lets too much escape. It filters out not only the excess water and the waste, but also an excess of albumin protein, a nutrient that normally stays in the blood. The filtered waste and excess albumin protein then move on to the tubules to be processed into urine. The problem here is that the tubules are unused to this excess of albumin protein, and that the reaction to the excess causes the cells in the tubules (tubular cells) to produce substances and/or signals which create and promote the scarring that leads to chronic kidney disease.

Research is focused on understanding the development of kidney disease and established renal failure in the hope of identifying new targets for drug therapy to improve the quality of life for renal patients.

Research is focused on developing an innovative patient-centred education program to help patients in the fight against early kidney disease.
chronic kidney disease could affect between 5 and 10 % of the population. Chronic kidney disease can not only lead to kidney failure but also death from cardiovascular diseases. Questions arise about how we can best help people with chronic kidney disease. If this can be done at the level of primary care it will be far better than having to wait till people arrive in hospital.

There are many things which influence whether chronic kidney disease develops into kidney failure. Currently we only partially understand some of these things. One questions is can we use the knowledge we currently have to improve primary care of renal patients, while at the same time continuing our ground breaking laboratory based research which will give us even more knowledge about the mechanisms of the disease. If pre-dialysis patients are given specialised education programmes will this help them understand their disease better and therefore help them look after themselves better and slow the progression of the disease and consequently prevent or delay them needing dialysis?

sometimes Leah, which I find baffling, the doctors can't
pinpoint the cause as to why you are having symptoms or
even complete renal failure. I suppose if genetic testing is
offered then it may be a different story.

I lost my kidneys to ploy cystic kidney disease (PKD)
yet I never knew that I also had Alports, that's what my
son lost his kidneys to, well, apparently he inherited Alports
gene from me, I was shocked and that's when the doctors
decided to do genetic testing, so now I find that I actually
carry two genes gone wrong! you know how upsetting that
is to find, felt horrible, terrible etc. As, before we decided to
have children, I went to genetic counseling to find out what PKD
gene I carried, as there are two, I was told the risk would be
very low, well, surprise with the Alports discovery years later.
Maybe ask for genetic testing. It may cost though, I'm from
Canada, it didn't cost anything, as genetics was interested in learning
more.

RE: Why Do Kidneys Stop Working?
Aww that must of been awful.i have 3 babies (11,20mth,9mth) so i will have to see what my outcome is then mention the gene thing.im in uk btw.i had a quick read up on high protein about 2 yrs ago but docs said bloods ok ect dont worry.so i didnt...but now i read ur bloods dont show signs of decreasing untill there at about %50?!?! Idk if thats true tho? It would be easyer if i had hypertention or diabites ect then that can be controled thus control any decreasing.i do kno once you have ckd 1/2 is irraversable.but hopefully i can be one of the lucky(but strange) ones who can stay at 1-2 for many years Smile

I wouldn't worry too much Leah, just take it as it comes, it sounds like your doctor
is keep an eye on things and if there's been a big change you would know by now.
are you on an ACE inhibitor? as they could reduce the level of protein. My youngest
has been on one and it does help reduce protein spillage.

oh a colposcopy, yes, that's when they look into the cervix right?
I had it before, I actually had some abnormal cells a few years
ago, which were removed by laser.
Glad your nurse is on top of things Leah, sometimes I think
they are way ahead of the doctors!!!!

I agree, way overloaded with work, patients, which can
lead to negligence sometimes.
good luck with the results Fingerscrossed
