Hi all.
I am 35 years old and mail.
I was born with just one kidney and it has never givin me a problem.
I had to go for an X-ray recently for something none related to this.
That X-ray showed that I have weak bones.
As a result of that I am now having to take vitamin D and calcium tablets.
Ive been doing a bit of research on all this and have seen links to vitamin D and calcium to the kidneys.
I was just wondering if only having the one kidney from birth could be the reason why I am now having to take vitamin D and calcium tablets.
I should add that I am small in frame as well. Height being only 5 foot 4, and only just over 8 stone in weight.
I also would like to know if to much vitamin D and calcium could be bad for your kidneys, Or Kidney as the case may be.
Any info on all this would be great.
PS, Sorry if I put this in the wrong place.
Feel free to move it. I well book mark this page so I can find it where ever you put it

I have been taking prednosolone for years and this makes my bones thinner so am taking alendronic acid tablets 70mg ever 2 weeks to protect my bones. My body tends to make too much calcium which was aproblem a while ago but seems to have settled down as too much calcium can clog your arteries and cuase heart attacks.
What ever my problems in health there is always something else to worry about.

Welcome to Kidney Friends

and you posted in the right thread
my guess is that you are not getting enough calcium via
your diet and therefore you now also require vitamin D as will
to help your body absorb and use calcium.

It may be Bluey, although normally when a person has one kidney, it will
grow and do the job of two. Water is recommended and lots of it
for people with only one kidney, also yearly function tests and blood
test. I would think it's more about how much nutrients you are getting
from food? and if that's in question, there maybe deficiency of nutrients
too.

many think that calcium supp. may lead to kidney stones, while
the opposite is in fact true. as for vitamin D, yes it is possible that one
can get too much, but I would think that your doctor will watch for this?
do you go for periodic blood tests Bluey?
Thank you for both your replies
Yes my Kidney is bigger then a normal one.
I do drink about 4 pints of milk a week and have things with cheese on.
I also have veg regularly and probably could do with eating moor fruit but on the hole I would say my diet is about average.
I also exercise regularly on my bike. Nothing to strenuous but it gets me out into the fresh air.
With me thinking that my life style and diet is not to bad this is whats making me think that maybe its my kidney that's not letting the nutrients I eat help my body in some way.
The doctors have all asked about my diet and life style and Ive told them the truth. Ive not made out I eat any better or exercise any moor then I do.
I used to have blood tests every year as a kid to make sure my kidney was all working as it should and there was never a problem.
The only other time Ive had a blood test in the last 20 years to test my kidney was the other week. That all came back good am glad to say.
I guss am just trying to understand how all this works so my weak bones don't turn into osteoporosis at a later age.
As I say I was thinking that it was in someway my kidney that was stopping what I eat turning into the nutrients that my body needs to build bone and stuff. If you understand what I am trying to say there in not a very clear way

They may have checked that am not sure.
Am not sure cos I have not much clue what parathyriod is.
I know its something to do with your hormones and the glands are at the back of your neck but that's it.
Am still trying to understand all this stuff.
It just seems like the moor I read and understand that the moor there is to understand.
Thanks for the link Jester.
My Doctor knows all about what I have told you so am guessing that they would had tested for this.
I do know that they tested my kidney and liver and I think some other things with a blood test they did.
Everything come back as normal.
Is it standard that they would check for this as well do you know?
I would think so Bluey...for sure !
