Quote: The government launched a new Web database on Wednesday that will give the public easy-to-access, centralized information on recalls of food and children's products.

The Web site provides pictures of recalled children's products and lets users search for information by keyword, date, product or company name.

The site brings together information from Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and dates back to product recalls from 1995.

"For the first time we are combining databases from different government departments to allow parents to easily search the information they need on recalled food and children's products," Health Minister Tony Clement said in a statement.

The database can be seen at http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca.

The issue of the safety of children's toys has been under the spotlight in recent months after massive recalls from U.S. companies due to concerns over high levels of lead and design defects found in toys manufactured in China
